Over time, the filter fills up with fur and debris and stops catching anything new. Rinsing won't restore it, so a fresh filter is what keeps your cat's water genuinely clean.
Every 2–4 weeks, or closer to every 2 weeks with multiple cats or a heavy shedder. Slower water flow, a discoloured filter, or cloudy water are signs it's time.
Soak the new filter in clean water for 5 minutes and rinse it. Then lift off the stainless steel tray, swap out the old filter and pop it back together. No tools needed.
It sits on the pump's water intake and catches larger bits like fur before they reach the pump. Rinse it when you clean the fountain, and replace it every third filter change or when it looks worn.
